Responsible Reese helps children learn to take responsibility for their actions, follow through on tasks, and make thoughtful choices. Through storytelling, movement, positive self-talk, and practice, children develop tools they can use at school, at home, and with others.
Positive Self-Talk
“I am responsible.”
How to Use This Lesson
1. Meet Responsible Reese
Introduce Responsible Reese, a real Powerful You kid who is learning to be responsible. Ask children, “What is something you can take care of all by yourself?” Talk about how being responsible means doing our part, taking care of our things, and remembering important jobs.
2. Breathe & Stretch
Choose a simple stretch from the Breathe and Stretch on the Beach book or follow Reese's FREE movement video. Invite children to stretch tall, take a deep breath, and get ready to take charge of their responsibilities.
3. Read the Powerful You Story
Read Responsible Reese's story from the Powerful You Primary book or laminated cards. Talk about Reese's feelings and experiences. Ask, “How does it feel when you finish something you're responsible for?”
4. Practice Positive Self-Talk
Say Reese's phrase together: “I am responsible.” Practice saying it aloud, then quietly in your mind. Encourage children to remember these words when they have a job to finish or something important to remember.
5. Write or Draw
Choose a writing or drawing activity from the Powerful You Primary book. Invite children to draw one responsibility they have at home or school, such as putting away toys, caring for a pet, or returning a library book.
6. Role-Play
Let children hold Reese's laminated card and pretend to be Responsible Reese! Act out situations such as finding a library book that needs to be returned, noticing a messy classroom area, or remembering unfinished work. Practice deciding what Reese could do without waiting for someone to remind her.
7. Display the Skill Sign
Display Responsible Reese's Checklist sign where children can see it. Review Reese's six responsibilities: being on time, returning library books, finishing classwork, keeping an area clean, staying organized, and practicing reading. Invite children to choose one responsibility to practice today. Celebrate when they follow through!
8. Collect & Celebrate with Digital Brag Tags
Notice children completing tasks, caring for belongings, staying organized, and taking responsibility without reminders. Celebrate their efforts with Digital Brag Tags and say, “You used your Powerful You thinking!”
