BREATHE & STRETCH
PREPARE THE BODY. FOCUS THE MIND. GET READY TO LEARN.
Breathe & Stretch is an important first step in the Powerful You lesson rhythm. A few minutes of mindful breathing and movement helps students release energy, settle their bodies, and prepare to participate in a meaningful life-skill lesson. The practice looks different at every age, but the purpose remains the same: helping students feel regulated, focused, and ready to connect.
THE POWERFUL YOU LESSON RHYTHM
1. Breathe
Slow down, notice the body, and focus attention.
2. Stretch
Release energy through simple, mindful movement.
3. Learn
Transition into a Powerful You story, discussion, and life-skill activity.
Breathe & Stretch can be used on its own as a brain break, but it is especially powerful when used before a Powerful You lesson.
BREATHE & STRETCH AT EVERY AGE
“I’ve noticed a big change in my students’ emotions, attitudes, and body language. They are more relaxed, focused, and ready to learn—and so am I!” Jennifer, Fifth-Grade Teacher
Primary: Grades K–1
Keep it playful, visual, and brief. Use imaginative movements, simple breathing cues, animals, nature, and positive words.
Intermediate: Grades 2–6
Combine breathing, purposeful movement, and positive self-talk to help students release energy, improve focus, and prepare for discussion.
Teens
Use short, age-respectful practices such as seated breathing, standing stretches, mindful movement, and quiet reflection. Emphasize choice, stress management, and self-awareness.
