Breathe & Stretch on the Beach
A book that combines movement, self-regulation, social skills, and positive self-talk
My husband, Eric, and I were fortunate to work as educators at the same school in Florida. My favorite days as an elementary teacher were when my class had physical education with my husband as the teacher. I wasn’t sure what games he played or skills he taught, but children always returned to class sweaty and ready to learn. It proved to be the optimal time to teach a difficult lesson. When I became a school counselor, I found myself observing his physical education class and discovering why his instruction had a positive effect on children. I took his ideas and added what I learned from my yoga teacher training to write the book Breathe and Stretch on the Beach.
Breathe and Stretch on the Beach is a non-competitive listening game that encourages movement, self-regulation, listening, stretching, focusing, cooperation, and relaxation. Children are also taught to use positive self-talk (talking in their head) during each pose. Florida wildlife is entwined throughout the book to encourage children to respect Florida’s natural beauty. This powerful “brain break” book can bring a little sunshine into a classroom at any time of the year – rain, snow, or shine.
Enjoy using Breathe and Stretch on the Beach before your emotional wellness lesson or any time of the day that you find your class needs a “brain break'“.
Much gratitude and appreciation,
Julie Frizzi, School Counselor
