My Sourdough Favorites

The simple tools I use to make my sourdough bread.

You don’t need a kitchen full of fancy equipment to make great sourdough! These are the tools and supplies I personally use and recommend for making the simple sourdough loaf I teach in Sourdough With Julie.

I’ve learned along the way that some products really do make the process easier—especially a good scale, banneton, scraper, parchment paper, and Dutch oven. I’ve gathered my favorites here so you can easily find what you need.

‍ Dough Hook

This dough hook is sturdy and does a great job scraping the flour from the bottom of my bowl. I use it to quickly mix and combine all of my ingredients until everything comes together. It's one of those simple tools that makes mixing sourdough so much easier!

‍ ‍Mixing Bowl

I love this mixing bowl because I can see the dough rising right through the sides. The handle is a must-have for me—it gives me something sturdy to hold onto while I’m mixing and working with the dough. Simple, practical, and perfect for sourdough! But, any mixing bowl will work!

Rice Flour

Rice flour was a game changer for me! I discovered that dusting my banneton with rice flour helps my dough slide out easily without sticking. I especially like this brand because the flour is silky, smooth, and easy to work with.

Parchment Paper

I’ve had some parchment paper nightmares! Other brands have stuck to my bread or the pan, which can be so frustrating after putting all that time into making a beautiful loaf. This brand doesn’t stick to my bread or my Dutch oven and has made the whole baking process so much smoother. It’s one sourdough supply I definitely don’t like to run out of!

Brod & Taylor Banneton

This is the only banneton I’ve used—and I’ve never felt the need to change! With a light dusting of rice flour, my dough releases easily from the basket and comes out with a beautiful shape. I also love that this style of banneton is designed to absorb some surface moisture from the dough, which helps create that beautiful sourdough crust when it bakes.

Bench Scraper

I didn’t have a bench scraper when I first started my sourdough journey, but now I wouldn’t want to be without one! I’ve discovered that it really helps me work with the dough and create a smooth, beautiful shape during the shaping process. And as a bonus, it’s perfect for scraping up all that flour that somehow ends up all over my kitchen when I’m finished! 😊

Cuisinart Cast Iron Dutch Oven

I’ve had my Cuisinart Cast Iron Dutch Oven for over 40 years! It has certainly stood the test of time, and it bakes a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread. I love how the heavy cast iron holds the heat and creates the perfect environment for baking my bread. This is truly one of those kitchen pieces that can last for years and years. 🍞

Bread Lame Sourdough Scoring Tool

A bread lame makes it easy to score your dough just before it goes into the oven. You don’t need anything fancy—any sharp, appropriate razor designed for scoring bread can work. Just remember, these blades are very sharp, so always handle them carefully and stay safe!

Beeswax Bread Storage Bag

I love using a beeswax bag to store my sourdough bread. It helps keep the bread fresher longer and extends the life of my loaf without trapping too much moisture. It’s a simple way to enjoy my homemade sourdough for several days after baking. 🍞

Bread Knife

This bread knife actually belonged to my grandmother, which makes it extra special to me. It has a thin, sharp blade that works beautifully for slicing sourdough. A good bread knife makes a difference—but even more important is waiting until your loaf has cooled before cutting into it. I’d love to know if you find the perfect knife!

King Arthur Bread Flour

This is the bread flour I use for my sourdough, and I always stay stocked up! I use it for the simple white sourdough loaf I teach in this course. King Arthur Bread Flour is a higher-protein flour, which helps give bread dough strength and rise.

‍ Digital Kitchen Scale

This digital scale is simple and easy to use. The tare/reset button lets you bring the scale back to zero after adding each ingredient, so there’s no math involved. Tare, add, tare, add—it makes measuring your sourdough ingredients so easy!
