Resettle with Ease

Tension is who you think you should be: relaxation is who we really are.
— Chinese Proverb

Thirty years ago when I became a school counselor, I was tense. I developed thought patterns that allowed me to multi-task and get a lot done at the expense of being present. My inner thoughts repeated without my recognition:

I SHOULD move quickly to rescue teachers and children. I SHOULD be tense and ready to react to trauma and hurt. I MUST help and save everyone.

After years of living in a reactive mode, I took my first yoga class. Through practice I learned the art of resettling my body with ease. Letting go of holding patterns and buried fatigue allowed me to make subtle changes in my mind, heart, and body. When I uncovered the hidden layers of buried stress, I discovered an unstoppable passion for teaching youth life lessons through movement. This is when Powerful You was created!

Making micro changes in a yoga pose allows your body to find a peaceful space. It gives you permission to balance effort with ease. Instead of being uncomfortable and suffering, adjust your body to find peace, space, and peace.

What micro changes can you make in your thoughts, words, and actions today so you can resettle with ease?

Classroom Tool:  Tense and Relax -  To practice progressive relaxation, sit in your chair or lie on the floor (if possible).  Clench and unclench your fists. Squeeze the muscles in your arms and shoulders and release.  Clench and unclench your toes.  Squeeze the muscles in your legs and hips and release. Firm your stomach and upper body.  Hold this and feel the tension.  Slowly release.   Now, tense and tighten your whole body.  Slowly release and feel the tingles and warm sensations.
