Memorizing Life Skill Phrases
1st grade students using breathe and stretch tools before practicing self-talk.
As a young child I was encouraged to memorize bible verses, math facts, and grammar rules. Although I disliked memorization, these skills are useful today in my daily life.
The above positive Powerful You phrases can be memorized, too. Kids want tools to help them navigate through difficulty.
Each of the twenty-six life skill lessons from Powerful You have a positive self-talk phrase. During each lesson, instruct students to say the matching phrase out loud. It is especially powerful when you combine movement with the self-talk. For example, while stretching the body in tree pose, encourage children to say in their head, “I live life full on ” from lesson O.
On your next visit, quiz them on previous life skill lessons. Can they remember the self-talk? Encourage the memorization so they recall these simple phrases during conflicts.
