Calm Minds for Testing Season: A Simple 5-Minute Reset for Students and Teachers

As testing season approaches, many students walk into the classroom carrying extra stress, nervous energy, and busy thoughts. Teachers often feel it too. The pressure of assessments can create tension for everyone in the room.

One simple and powerful way to prepare for success is to help calm the nervous system before testing begins.

I like to compare the mind before testing to a shaken snow globe. When the globe is stirred up, the flakes swirl everywhere, making it hard to see clearly. Our thoughts can feel the same way when we are anxious, overwhelmed, or distracted.

But when we pause, breathe, and become still, everything begins to settle.

The mind clears. Focus returns. We can think more clearly.

A 3–5 Minute Pre-Test Reset

Before testing, try taking just a few minutes to “move the stress out” of the body. This short reset can be energizing, calming, and fun all at once.

Put on upbeat music and invite students to join in.

Try These Simple Stress-Busters

Shake It Out
Shake arms, legs, hands, and shoulders to release nervous energy.

Swivel, Sway and Tap It Out
Swivel your body and let gravity guide your arms side to side. Gently tap around the front and back of your heart space, shoulders, temples, and legs to wake up the body and help regulate stress.

Cross It Out
March in place while tapping opposite hand to knee or elbow across the body. Cross-lateral movement supports coordination, focus, and brain integration.

Crouch It Out
Do a few slow squats to feel grounded, strong, and steady.

Breathe It Out
Finish with three slow, deep breaths together.

Why It Works

Movement helps release tension stored in the body. Breathing helps calm the nervous system. Laughter and connection help students feel safe and supported.

And the best part? Kids often giggle, smile, and reconnect with each other during the process.

Teachers benefit too, because testing stress affects everyone.

Build Excitement and Ownership

Want to make it even more engaging?

Let students help choose their favorite “stress buster songs” for the week. Giving them ownership creates excitement and turns the routine into something they look forward to each day.

A Small Shift That Makes a Big Difference

A few minutes of movement can create a powerful shift before testing begins. When we help students settle their bodies, we help settle their minds—just like a snow globe coming to rest.

Wishing you a calm, connected, and successful testing week.
